Ebay Strikes Again

Postby countryjoe on Thu Aug 21, 2008 10:21 am

Looks like ebay is working hard at stomping on the small sellers again.

"Beginning in late October 2008, checks and money orders will no longer be allowed as payment methods on eBay. All items appearing on eBay.com must be paid for using either:
PayPal (funded by PayPal account balance, credit card, debit card, bank account, PayPal Pay Later, PayPal Buyer Credit or eBay gift certificate)
Credit or debit card payment to a seller (through a seller's Internet merchant account), ProPay, Payment upon pickup.

In January 2009, all of the approved electronic payment methods will be integrated into eBay checkout. For example, if a seller offers credit or debit card as a payment option, buyers will be able to directly enter their credit card information securely in eBay checkout and their payment will be directly routed to the seller's Internet merchant account. We are also working with other electronic payment providers currently included in our Accepted Payments Policy to integrate their services into eBay checkout in 2009".

But I'll bet Google Checkout won't be included.

Not only will this hurt sellers it will also hurt buyers like myself who buy assorted collectibles from sellers who only accept checks or money orders, the guy cleaning out the attic, garage etc. or his relatives estate. People who aren't in the business per se. So unless they get a Paypal account they can't sell and I can't buy. Also many buyers don't want a Paypal account or don't have a credit card, now they are shut out.

Well Joe: It looks like E-Bay does not want any sellers to have any selling ability other than what they propose. I wonder why they must be getting a cut from PayPal and the other sites what else could it be. This will cut down on the sites selling ability because some dealers like me do not go through PayPal to buy or to sell on E-Bay. I like to be able to do as I would like when it comes to paying. So I guess a lot of dealers will not be selling on E-Bay with the new rules unless they just go along with whatever E-Bay says. I for one will not. Although I have not used E-Bay in a long time. We allow cash, check, money order, Google Checkout, PayPal. Our site supports just about any payment method, gateway, or shopping cart available. Heck, I'll bet at least one of our sellers would take wampum if you asked politely. I've never been able to understand why eBay limits payment methods.

Of course, we allow (indeed, encourage!) our sellers to link to their websites and/or other selling sites. We see it as being about YOU being able to build YOUR business as YOU see fit. But I guess that's just crazy.

Hi Joe: Its Marge, I have not been on the computer for two weeks due to hurricane Ike. I have not had electricity but I got it back on Friday Sept 26. so I am good to go now. I still think ebay stinks and many sellers and buyers are not going to be doing business on ebay with that kind of strict rules. I guess we don't count. Lets wait and see how many sellers they will have in the future. I think not too many. I for one am not one who will be there. I also will not be able to buy which I do once in a while. Oh well such is life when you are the superior being. Talk to you again.

Hi Marge, glad things are ok and your back in action. Didn't know you were in the hurricane area. You can still buy using a credit card through PayPal if you don't have an PayPal account.
