Found this a few weeks ago, don't remember where though, probably got an email from one of the many sites I subscribe to. So don't know who to credit. Red wording is mine.
7 Essential SEO Techniques
Make your site more attractive to search engines and directories. There are many techniques used to gain better positioning in search results, but the most important are...
Own Your Own Domain Name
Don’t let your site be discriminated against. If you don't have your own domain a savvy searcher will be much less likely to click through to your site than if your Web address is simply http://www.mydomain.com. It is more professional. Also, some engines treat your site address as another "keyword".
Use META Tags Correctly
True search engines use automated programs to search the World Wide Web for new and updated Web pages. META tags aren't visible to visitors but they tell spiders what the pages are all about. In general, the most useful META tags in terms of search engine success are the "keywords" and "description" tags. Only a few search engines use the keyword tag, but add it anyway
Tune Your Keywords
Keywords should provide a unique identification of the content offered on your Web site. Put the most important words first, Use the plural form of nouns. Try to make the keywords for each page unique or in a different order in the least.
Write a Compelling Description
Spiders index the words in the META Description as if they were keywords. AVOID stop words like: and, or, at, if. A description less then 150 characters will be displayed in its entirety on the search results. Start with a call to action and make sure it has a high a concentration of keywords while still making sense.
Load up the Keywords in Your Site's Text
Depending on the search engine, the text displayed on your site can be even more important than the META tags. The higher the concentration of keywords (within reason, make the page people friendly) included within your pages' text, the better chance your site will be highly ranked when a user enters one of those words into a search engine.
Hyperlink Keywords
Weave the most intricate web that you can. Add pages with additional information on a key word and be sure to hyperlink words, especially those on your home page to the supporting pages of your site. Every supporting page should have a link back to the home page and to at least one other supporting page. Search engines follow every link they come across. The more you have the more time they spend on your site.
Plant External Links
This is where those blogs, forums, and free sites come in handy. Find all the free places you can to write about your keywords and link them back to your main site. Search engines determine credibility by the number of external links pointing to a website. If the ROI is right, it is worth paying other people to add links from their site to yours. Not only will the search engines naturally rank your site better, you will capture traffic from the site you paying to be on, so choose wisely and look for compatible traffic.
These are just a few pointers, not everything needed to rank high in the search engines.
