Search Engine Optimization

A few search engine optimization tips.

The first thing you need to do is identify the keyword phrases that are relevant to your shop. When you have decided on your "keyword phrases" you need to put them in your page's "Title" tag.

On your main or first page of your shop:
The title tag is definitely the most important tag in the header section of your web page. The title tag is displayed in the blue bar at the top of your browser window. The title tag is a one-liner describing your business, and it includes the most important keywords. The search engines place a lot of relevance on the words contained within the title tag, so be sure to include your targeted keyword phrases. The title tag shouldn't exceed 60 or 65 characters. People seach for what your selling, so don't waste space wih your name.

Description:
The description tag is used to describe your shop. Some search engines will use this information to summarize your website in their search listings. It's again of utmost importance that you also include your keyword phrases in the description tag. The description tag should provide a 25-30 word description of your website.

Keywords:
The keyword tag should of course include the "keyword phrases" that you are targeting in order of importance. Start with the most important and then proceed to less important but still relevant keywords. Do not include keywords that are not relevant to the theme of your site. Do not repeat any word more than 3 times within the keyword tag.

Keyword tags aren't used as much anymore due to spamming, but you should use them anyway.

The same goes for your product pages, the title is the name of the product, and the product description will show up in the description tags. Makes sense, right?

Different shop setups have their own ways, some have places to add keywords and some don't.

Submitting your shop to search engines isn't really the fastest way to get spidered and indexed. Links from other sites that are regularly crawled by the SE's is the quickest. Placing links to your shop in popular forums using "keywords" in the link are the best. When using signature links in the forums put your "keywords" instead of your name. People search for what you sell, not you.

Got a blog? If not do so, add little blips about what you deal in, new shop additions with links to the items etc. Use keywords related to what your sell in the copy. Add links to your shop. Search engines love blogs, search engines love pages that are updated at least once a week.
